A shift in dengue symptoms! Prevention and home remedies to combat Dengue

Dengue (Pronounced as Dengee) fever is caused by any one of the four closely related viruses (serotypes) transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and are related to the viruses that cause yellow fever. Dengue is mostly prevalent in the tropical areas with approximately 100 million cases each year worldwide. Female Aedes mosquitoes transmit this disease from one person to another. This mosquito is a daytime biter and most active in the hours after sunrise and before sunset.

A mosquito gets infected when bites an infected person while having the fever and it takes 8-12 days before the infected mosquito can transmit it to others. But this fever does not spread from person to person. This fever can be diagnosed by clinical symptoms and blood testing. The general symptoms are as below –

  • Sudden onset of fever for 3-7 days
  • Severe muscle and joint pain (also known as break bone fever)
  • Intense headache and pain behind eyes
  • Loss of appetite and vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Bleeding usually from gums and nose.

Dengue symtoms

Proper treatment can cure the disease and rarely fatal but repeated occurrence may cause excessive bleeding and shock.

Doctors in Mumbai city noticed the shift of dengue symptoms which may strongly be associated with the mutations of certain genes led to the more resistant form of the pathogen. The symptoms were mimicking the classic symptoms of gastritis but the white blood cell and platelet dip was not severe in those cases. Also in some cases they never had gone through platlet dip.  The group of doctors also said, patients were suffering from high grade prolonged fever that was tough to combat.

Precautions: Female Aedes mosquitoes generally bite humans because they need proteins to develop eggs. They can breed thrice in their life span and at a time they can lay 100 eggs. The top breeding places include- Road side Drain water, Flower pots, Air cooler tanks, Roof gutter, Plant axils etc. To prevent Aedes breeding, these places should be cleaned regularly and additionally use mosquito repellant creams, sprays and mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites.

Treatment: There is no specific treatment or vaccination available to prevent dengue fever. Visit the doctor and they will prescribe you medicines to relieve pain, get down fever and also the medicines to increase the immunity. But follow some of the home remedies which are known to be effective enough against Dengue symptoms.

Home remedies: While having the infection, try to take less spicy easily digestable foods. Intake lot of water, juices and soups and take rest. Below are the home remedies that greatly help to overcome the physiological symptoms of dengue-

Juice of Papaya leaf: Get juice from fresh papaya leaves, though very bitter in taste, it is very effective in increasing the platelet and white blood cell count. Approximately 1 tablespoon twice a day is effective.

Orange juice: It helps to improve the digestion and also increases the immunity and has rehydration power.

Coconut water: Helps to replace body fluid loss and improves immunity.

Black grape juice: Highly effective in increasing the blood count.

Fenugreek and Coriander: Fenugreek is a good pain reliever. Make tea with fenugreek or soak the fenugreek seeds overnight in a cup of drinking water and take it in the morning. Coriander leaves help to increase the taste of your food and also help in digestion and cut down fever.

Be careful and conscious enough about your symptoms and take the right steps at right time.
